How to Use the Display Test

  1. Select or deselect individual tests using the checkboxes above. All 21 are selected by default.
  2. Click "Start Tests" to launch the fullscreen testing suite with your selected tests.
  3. Use the Up/Down arrows on the left side, scroll wheel, or arrow keys to navigate between tests.
  4. Click the ☰ menu button (top-left) to see all tests and jump to any test directly.
  5. Press H to hide/show the controls or M to toggle the menu.
  6. Press ESC or click the button to exit the test.

Understanding the 21 Tests

  • Test Pattern: A comprehensive pattern with circles, lines, and color gradients to check overall image quality.
  • Dead Pixels (Black/White/RGB): Solid color screens to find dead, stuck, or hot pixels.
  • Uniformity: Gray tone screen to assess brightness uniformity. Adjustable between 25%, 50%, and 75% gray.
  • Color Distances: Tests how well your monitor differentiates between similar shades. Adjustable RGB values.
  • Gradients: Checks for color banding in smooth gradients.
  • Sharpness: Tests text rendering clarity. Switchable between black-on-white and white-on-black modes.
  • Viewing Angle: A gradient pattern to test how colors shift when viewed from different angles.
  • Gamma: Helps evaluate your monitor's gamma curve using reference gray strips.
  • Response Time: Moving bars to check for ghosting. Adjustable speed and pause controls.
  • Black Level: Tests visibility of dark shades near pure black.
  • White Saturation: Tests visibility of bright shades near pure white.
  • Contrast: Checks the contrast range from dark to light across multiple colors.
  • Inversion (Pixel Walk): Tests for pixel inversion artifacts in fine patterns.
  • Motion Blur (UFO): A moving UFO to check for motion blur and ghosting.
  • Color Bars: SMPTE-style color bar pattern for color accuracy checking.
  • Checkerboard: Tests 1:1 pixel mapping and sharpness with checkerboard patterns.
  • Aspect Ratio: Verifies circles appear round — checks for correct aspect ratio.

When to Test Your Display

  • When purchasing a new monitor — check for defects within the return period
  • After updating graphics drivers or changing display settings
  • When setting up a multi-monitor configuration
  • Before starting color-critical work like photo editing
  • If you notice visual anomalies during normal use
  • Periodically to monitor display health over time

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to run all 21 tests?

Not necessarily. For a quick check, the dead pixel tests, uniformity, and gradient tests are the most important. Run all tests for a thorough evaluation, such as when buying a new monitor.

Can I select only specific tests?

Yes! Use the checkboxes to select or deselect individual tests. You can also use the "Select All" and "Deselect All" buttons for quick toggling. Only selected tests will run when you start.

What should I look for in each test?

Look for anomalies: dots in solid color screens (dead pixels), uneven brightness (uniformity), visible steps in gradients (banding), blurry text (sharpness), and trailing shadows behind moving objects (response time/motion blur).

Can I use this on a laptop screen?

Yes! These tests work on any display — desktop monitors, laptop screens, tablets, and even phones. The fullscreen mode adapts to your screen size.

Why does my monitor fail the gamma test?

Gamma accuracy depends on your monitor's calibration. Most consumer monitors ship with a gamma of approximately 2.2. If results look off, try calibrating your display using your OS display settings or a hardware calibrator.
