About Dual N-Back
The Dual N-Back task is one of the few brain training exercises scientifically linked to improvements in Fluid Intelligence ($Gf$). Unlike simple memory games, it forces you to manipulate information in your working memory constantly.
You must track two independent streams of stimuli (Visual Position and Audio Letter) and match them to the stimuli presented exactly N steps ago.
How to Play
- Press Start. The square will move, and a letter will be spoken (if audio mode is enabled).
- If the current Position matches the one from N steps ago, press A.
- If the current Letter matches the one from N steps ago, press L.
- If both match, press both. If neither match, do nothing.
- As you improve, the game will automatically increase the N-Level if Adaptive Leveling is on.
How to Level Up (Strategies)
- Rehearsal: Repeat the sequence in your head constantly. For 2-back, say "A, Top-Left... B, Bottom-Right" and drop the oldest item as a new one arrives.
- Intuition vs. Logic: At higher levels (N=4+), pure logic becomes too slow. You must rely on the "feeling" of familiarity, a state known as flow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this actually increase IQ?
Some studies (Jaeggi et al., 2008) showed significant gains in fluid intelligence after consistent training. While debated, it remains the gold standard for cognitive enhancement research.
How often should I train?
Consistency is key. 20 minutes a day, 4-5 times a week, is the recommended schedule for noticeable results.
What is the highest N-level?
Most beginners struggle with N=2. Highly trained individuals can reach N=6 or even N=8. The theoretical limit depends on your innate working memory capacity.
