What is a Mouse Drag Test?

A Mouse Drag Test checks whether your mouse can handle sustained click-and-drag operations with precision. Unlike simple click tests, drag tests verify that your mouse button stays engaged during movement and that your sensor tracks accurately across different path shapes.

Why Test Mouse Dragging?

  • Switch Reliability: A failing mouse switch may release during drag operations, causing dropped files, broken selections, or lost game actions.
  • Sensor Accuracy: Ensures your mouse tracks smoothly through curves and direction changes without jitter or skipping.
  • Gaming Performance: Many games require precise click-and-drag mechanics. A mouse that can't hold its button reliably will cost you.

The 5 Challenge Levels

  1. Straight Line: Simple left-to-right drag. The warm-up.
  2. Rectangle: Drag through 4 corners of a rectangle. Tests direction changes.
  3. Ellipse: Follow an elliptical curve. Tests smooth tracking.
  4. Stadium: A rounded rectangle path with 5 waypoints. Combines curves and straight lines.
  5. Figure-8: The ultimate test — an infinity sign path with 5 waypoints. Requires precise control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my drag keep dropping?

If your mouse releases the click mid-drag, your switch may be worn out. This is common in older mice, especially those with Omron switches. Try cleaning the switch or replacing it.

Can I use this on mobile?

This test is designed for desktop mice. Touch devices use a fundamentally different input method and won't give meaningful results for mouse switch testing.

What is a good completion time?

For Level 1, under 1 second is fast. For Level 5 (Figure-8), completing under 5 seconds shows excellent mouse control and sensor accuracy.
